By following the Performance Guide, you are sacrificing a lot of graphical quality for increased FPS. Before continuing, be certain you are willing to accept this trade-off. The game will look much worse after completion of the guide.

This guide has to be refollowed after every update for Living Skyrim.

This guide will be broken up into different sections. Sections will be in bold and have a larger font than normal. Some sections will be simple INI changes, somewhat complex LOD changes, or changes with windows/programs itself.

The changes are meant to minimize or even eliminate stuttering, increase fps(in some cases). With that said, this may work wonders for some, and for others it might do little to nothing. With that said, this guide will benefit almost everyone if you follow it through entirely, but users with 6gb of VRAM or less will see the biggest difference.

This guide will take a couple of hours.

Windows 10 and Programs Optimizations

First, go to your Skyrim install directory, mine is in D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition.

Right click on SkyrimSE.exe and click properties. Go to the compatibility tab and make sure disable full screen optimizations is checked.

Next click change high DPI settings and make sure override high DPI scaling is checked.

Next, click the Windows search button, and type in Graphics Settings and make sure Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is enabled if the option is there.

Next step varies from system to system. You are going to want to open up your GPU’s control panel. AMD users, you are going to have to figure this step out on your own as I have a nvidia card.

AMD users: Enable vsync through your GPU control panel.

Nvidia users: Right click on your desktop and select NVIDIA control panel. Select manage 3d settings in the left pane, and from there select program settings in the right pane, and from the dropdown menu, select Skyrim (pictures below)

Copy the settings below.

INI Tweaks

First, open up file explorer and open up your LS3 install folder. Then open the tools folder:

(Make sure mod organizer 2 is closed during this.) Then open the BethINI (ONLY LAUNCH WITH MO CLOSED) folder. Inside you’ll find an executable called bethINI.exe open it.

Once BethINI is open, follow these instructions:

Turn off Godrays or put them on low (although I recommend them off).

Go to the basic tab and click save and exit.

If you want more fps from these ini tweaks, enable ambient occlusion in BethINI and disable it in ENB.

Paste that file into this file path:

\LS3\profiles\Living Skyrim 3

Turn on ambient occlusion in BethINI if not using an ENB, keep it off if using an ENB.

Download my SSEDisplayTweaks.ini here and place it in \LS3\mods\SSE DisplayTweaks\SKSE\Plugins: Click Me!

And overwrite when prompted for both files.

Mini, but important step, download this config file here and place it in this directory: D:\LS3\mods\No Grass In Objects\NetScriptFramework\Plugins

The INI tweaking portion is done. If you feel the need to tweak them further, feel free to do so in BethINI.

After downloading my manual tweaks, don’t select any presets within bethini or my tweaks will be reverted. Manually change stuff in bethini if you want more performance or better visuals.

Mod Swapping

Download the 1k or 512 version of this mod: Click Me!

Install it. Don’t extract the BSA

Enable the mod and place it after the mod Folkvangr - Grass and Landscape Overhaul in the left side of mo2.

Look for the esp from the mod you just installed (Realistic Grass Field) and place it after the esp Folkvangr - Grass and Landscape Overhaul.esp

Disable the mod Folkvangr - Grass and Landscape Overhaul.

Warning!

IF YOU MESSED UP ANY OF THE ABOVE STEPS, RERUN WABBAJACK TO REVERT ALL SETTINGS TO DEFAULT AND FOLLOW AGAIN.

LOD Generation

Step 1

Create a backup of the following mods:

(right click the mods and click create backup) this will be used if you mess up any of the steps/want to undo changes.

LS3 Grass Cache

SSELODGen Output

TexGen Output

DynDOLOD Output

Occlusion Output

Step 2

Create a backup of the mod list and plugin list.

Step 3

Delete all of the contents from the following mods by opening them in file explorer (right click and click open in explorer)

SSELODGen Output

TexGen Output

DynDOLOD Output

Occlusion Output

Step 5

Select xLodGenx64 from the dropdown of executables in mo2 and click run

Once it loads, right click in the left pane of the window and click select all

In the right half of the window untick occlusion and select terrain lod

Should look like this currently.
Follow these next pictures and copy the settings exactly:

If your settings look like mine, select Generate and wait patiently. This should take around 40 minutes. Once complete, enable the mod sselodgen output in MO2.

Step 6

Select texgenx64 from the dropdown menu.

Wait for it to load, and copy my settings below and click start.

Step 7

Go to the output path you made for texgen and copy those files into the old texgen output mod and then enable the mod and restart mo2.

Select dyndolodx64 from the dropdown menu and select advanced once the window appears. Select medium depending on how much performance you want.

Make sure everything is selected in the top left box (right click and select all) and copy my settings below.

Select ok when your window looks like mine.

Step 8

Go to the output you made for dyndolod (should be the /tools/dyndolod/dyndolod output) and copy its contents into the dyndolod output mod in mo2. And enable the mod then restart mo2.

Select xLODGenx64 from the dropdown menu and select all in the left pane of the window that appears.

Uncheck the terrain lod checkbox and check the occlusion check box (idiot check, only occlusion should be enabled.)

Once finished, the occlusion.esp should be in the mod sselodgen output in mo2.

Right click on sselodgen output and click open in explorer.

Cut occlusion.esp and paste it in the mod occlusion output within mo2.

Enable the mod and restart mo2.

Step 9

Restore the two backups of the modlist and plugin list you made at the start of this section (LOD GENERATION)

If your map is blank after this process, download this mod, enable it and place it at the end of the load order and disable any plugins with missing masters.

After, uninstall the other paper world map mods.

NOTE* the grass cache mod should be disabled AND have nothing inside of it.

You’re done! The performance is modlist update compatible unless stated otherwise, in which case you'll get notified.

Before:

39 to 55 fps inside cities and around cities -

a bit of stuttering

After:

Stable 60 fps almost everywhere -

no stuttering

Before:

25 to 40 fps with extreme stuttering/crashes

(almost unplayable)

After:

35 to 55 fps with very mild stuttering in cities and outside solitude

20-30 fps with stuttering

After:

40-50 fps with less stuttering

35 - 50 FPS depending on the area, pretty frequent stutters

After: 50+ FPS sometimes dips below to 40-45 in certain areas, less stutters but still happen
